The growing trend of obesity in the United States has caused many health problems for the majority of Americans. There are many reasons people put on weight and most of it is due to their lifestyle. Here are 14 habits that you can kick in order to avoid the obesity trend.

1.TV Watching – Research has shown that people who watch about 2 hours of TV per day are more likely to be overweight than those that only watch half an hour of TV per day. Sitting stationary while watching TV causes your heart rate, blood pressure, and metabolic rate to decrease which means you are burning 20-30 less calories per hour. The same correlation has been made for children similarly, so keep your children away from the TV and outside being active in order for them to maintain a healthy body weight.

2.Eating Too Fast – With the fast pace of our world today, it seems as if our life has sped up as well. With our life being sped up, we feel as if we have to eat faster in order to keep up with our lifestyle. It takes the brain nearly 15-20 minutes to trigger the feeling of fullness to the body, which means that by the time you feel full you have already eaten too much. Fast eating can cause symptoms such as high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, and insulin resistance.

3.Task Snacking – Task snacking is when you eat while you are doing other activities. Most of the time your attention is mostly on the other activity you are doing, whether it be your computer, driving, watching TV, or talking on the phone, therefore you don’t realize how much you are actually snacking. The lack of awareness leads to overeating.

4.Passion for Fast Food – People like the easy way out and what is easier than the drive thru? Everyone is too stressed and too busy to make healthy dinners, therefore resort to the convenience of the nearest greasy burger joint. The ingredients abundant in fast foods that lead to obesity are they are high in saturated and trans-fat, have low fiber content, and have large portion sizes. The three of those together is the obesity triple threat.

    5. Eating to Manage Feelings– Emotional eating is the kiss of death to most people. People use food as their comfort or escape from emotions such as depression, anxiety, or loneliness. It has been estimated by experts that 75% of overeating is a result of emotions. Instead of eating to comfort your emotions, try to find a release by exercising or taking a relaxing walk.

6.Too Busy To Exercise – Again, time is everyone’s worst enemy in today’s world. With the busy schedules of people today, exercise if often what is forgotten the most. No one has time to go to the gym in the middle of the day, therefore their metabolism slows down and they begin packing on the pounds.

7.Your Friends Can Make You Fat – The New England Journal of Medicine coined the phrase that obesity is becoming “socially contagious”. The study concluded that if you have an overweight friend, sibling, or spouse your risk of obesity is increase 37-57%.

8.Lack of Sleep – A study conducted by The University of Bristol in the UK found that for every one hour decrease of sleep, after a full eight hours, was linked to almost 3% more body fat. Sleep deprivation boosts the appetite stimulating hormone ghrelin and lowers leptin levels, an appetite suppressor.

9.Unaware of Calories and Fat – Most people don’t read food labels and don’t really understand exactly what they are putting into their body. Being unaware of the caloric or fat value of the food that you are putting into your mouth can lead to weight gain because you could easily be consuming twice as many calories as your body needs, or much more.

10.Credit Cards – A study conducted by Visa that included 100,00 fast food restaurant transactions found that people who use their credit card to pay for food spent 30% more than those who paid with cash.

11.Missing Meals – Research has proven that breakfast is a very important meal and those who fail to eat breakfast are more likely to be overweight. Denise Bruner, an obesity specialist, claims that skipping meals results in “tremendous bout of compensatory hunger.” Therefore, it is incorrect to believe that if you skip meals you are going to lose weight, it has the opposite effect.

12.Uncomfortable Clothing – A study done by researchers at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse found that the clothing you wear has an impact on the amount of physical activity. Casual and comfortable clothing promote physical activity because you are more comfortable getting up and moving around because you don’t feel restricted by the clothing you are wearing.

13.Neglecting Scales – Although the scale may be some peoples worst fear, it can be used as your best tool when you are trying to shed the pounds. The University of Minnesota conducted a study finding that those who did daily weigh ins lost about 12 pounds over 2 years as opposed to those who didn’t weigh in only lost about 4 pounds in 2 years. Being aware of your daily weight can be used as a motivation tool and is a good way to keep your goal within reach.

14.Boredom – When people don’t know what to do with their free time, a lot turn to their kitchen just because it’s the only thing they know. The Priory Group in the U.K. found that people ate more when they were bored than when they were stressed.

It sometimes seems impossible to eat healthfully when you’re on the go all day. But don’t  resort to high calorie vending machine options or fast food just yet. Try these balanced choices,  none take more than a minute to prepare…less time than the Burger King line and a whole lot better for you!

    1. Small organic apple with 2 teaspoons of an organic raw peanut butter,  almond butter or try out NuttZo as another great option, of an excellent way to incorporate fruit, healthy fat, and protein.

    2. 6 ounces of low fat organic yogurt (Try Fage Greek Yogurt). Work towards your daily calcium needs and reap the benefits of healthy probiotic cultures.

    3. 3 ounces of low fat organic cottage cheese with a few organic whole grain crackers. This combo of healthy whole grains plus protein will keep you full for hours.

    4. 100 Calorie Pack of Popcorn. Avoid the oil-drenched movie theater varieties: these proportioned bags are available in several brands and are low in fat and pack impressive fiber.

    5. 1 cup of organic whole grain cereal (try Natures Path) with organic skim milk. A quick but wholesome way to start your day off.

    6. Individual unsweetened organic apple sauce with a few walnuts or raw almonds. This tasty snack provides a serving of fruit and fat to keep you satiated.

5 Little Known Benefits of Losing Fat

I am sitting on the plane the other day and the woman next to me, Kate, strikes up a conversation… well, lo and behold, after asking what I did, the conversation turned to fat loss and how she can get the number on the scale to be lower.

That seems to be a regular occurrence.

After a few basic common questions like “how do I get rid of this and this (as she pinched the back of her arm) and stomach.”

It turned to “What do you think of Alli?”  (over the counter FDA approved weight loss product).

Now, coincidentally, this woman weighed was not overweight … so as I sat there and listened to everything she was asking and thought about this later (we talked almost the entire 1 hour plane ride), I wondered what she REALLY wanted.  Did she REALLY want to lose weight?

    She didn’t need to.

Did she REALLY want to tighten up her arms?  Her stomach?  Again, she was very small and in seemingly great shape.

But with the questions she asked, she wasn’t looking to achieve small outcome goals (firmer arms or stomach) – there were other underlying questions she was trying to find the answer to.

That brings me to the 3 Little Known Benefits of Fat Loss.  It’s not just about the scale.

A boost in confidence. We recently sent out a survey asking women what one word would summarize why they exercise and eat well.  72% answered “more confidence.”  Research backs this up too.

Higher self esteem. Fitness and fatness are directly correlated to having a self esteem.  Higher body fat and body weight means lower self esteem and vice versa.  Are there exceptions?  Of course…but as a whole this is how the data fall.

You’ll be paid more. Seriously.  Research shows those who weigh less are paid more.   Maybe it’s connected to the boost in confidence and how you carry yourself.

As I talked to Kate, the Syracuse alumni who is now working in DC, I thought about her questions.  Asking about an FDA approved weight loss drug for someone who is clearly not overweight (that’s a story for a different newsletter).

What I think most people (women, in particular) are after is a boost in confidence and self esteem.  It’s NOT the number on a scale.

Ever heard that eating celery will make you slim down because it burns more than you consume eating it? Some bad news: there are no so called “negative calorie” foods. Read what weight loss experts MorhResults.com have to say about it:

    Negative Calorie Fat Burning Foods

Here I am in the meeting room … a beautiful corner office high above the city.

I’m sitting at the table with a professional athlete and his agent.

“Chris – here’s the deal” the agent said, “we need to get 37 pounds off of him ASAP.  We need a plan in place to do this.”

Now, keep in mind, there is a lot at stake here, so when he says ASAP, exactly how it sounds.

Mind you, this wasn’t the first of our meetings, so some things have already been in place and this athlete was already down 17 lbs.  But hit a bit of a plateau for the last few days.

His agent said “What’s the deal with those foods that burn calories – shouldn’t he be eating these?”

Ahhhh, the foods that “burn” calories.

You’ve probably heard this before.  The thought is that eating certain foods will burn more calories than they provide.  In other words, they have “negative” calories.

Celery is one food that often gets promoted most as a negative calorie food.  But cucumbers, some berries, grapefruits, and others fall into the mix as well.

    Is this true, though?

Can we eat certain foods that burn more calories than they provide to your body?

    Let’s break this down.

Every food we eat cause and increase in metabolism – this is called the thermic effect of food.  Some foods cause a bigger “jump” than others.

Protein, for example, causes the biggest jump, followed by carbohydrates, and finally fat.  When I say “jump” – it’s estimated to be at around 10-15% of your overall calories.  In other words, if you eat 2000 calories each day, the thermic effect of food would be around 200-300 calories each day.

So where does this “negative calorie” thing come into play?

Well, it doesn’t.  It’s a myth (surprise, surprise).

No food causes a bigger increase in metabolism than the calories the foods provide.

Now, of course celery is a very low calorie food, but the negative calorie “thing” is still not true.  It’s a 100% nutrition myth that has been around for years and apparently still pops its ugly head once in awhile.

Don’t get me wrong – celery is a great snack, particularly with a little natural peanut butter.  And, at the end of the day, all those fruits and veggies mentioned above are.  Eat more of these, the non processed whole foods, and less of the prepackaged, high fat, high sugar, high calorie stuff, and you’ll not just lose weight, but you’ll be much healthier.

So how did our conversation end with the athlete and his agent?

Well, hopefully I effectively squelched another nutrition myth with at least 2 people…

…but I am 100% confident there will be more questions about similar fat loss myths down the road.

This refreshing citrus fruit is a perfect summer snack. Not only is it low in calories and delicious, grapefruit does the body good. Here’s why:

    1.  Get healthy. Grapefruit is rich in immunity boosting Vitamin C. Numerous studies have linked Vitamin C intake to reduced severity of cold and flu symptoms.

    2.  Antioxidant effects. The pretty pink color of grapefruit is due to lycopene, a phylonutrient linked to anti-tumor activity. It fights oxygen free radicals, the compounds responsible for many types of cell damage.

    3.  Fight disease. The limonoids in grapefruit promote the formation of glutathione-S-tranferase, a detoxifying enzyme. Laboratory testing has shown that limonoids assist in fighting mouth, skin, lung, and breast cancers.

    4.  Lower your cholesterol. Grapefruit can reduce your levels of LDL(the “bad” cholesterol)  and triglycerides.

Enjoy this healthy fruit plain or try adding grapefruit to fruit salad or juicing it.

If their refreshing texture and tangy taste aren’t enough, eat oranges for your health! Reasons to enjoy this yummy citrus fruit all summer long:

    1. Oranges are one of the best food sources of Vitamin C around. This important vitamin boosts immunity, promotes gum health, and protects your body from free radicals.

    2. The herperdin molecule in oranges has been shown to lower high blood pressure and cholesterol.

    3. It’s not just the Vitamin C! Drinking orange juice is more beneficial than Vitamin C supplements alone. In a recent study at the University of Milan, subjects that drank orange juice vs. consumed fortified water with Vitamin C incurred less free radical damage when their blood samples were exposed to hydrogen peroxide. So skip the vitamin fortified drinks and go for a glass of OJ!

    4. Oranges and other citrus fruits offer substantial protection against esophageal, oro-phayngeal/laryngeal (mouth, larynx and pharynx), and stomach cancers.

So add some oranges into your diet today!
